Overview of IFA Courses & Training

The International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA) offers several different levels of training from level 2 to level 5, so there is something for everyone. Below you will find a brief introduction to the types of courses provided with elaborated versions on the right hand side.

Aromatouch Carer Course

This is for those who wish to learn a less invasive type of therapy. The course is equivalent to level 2 of the National training and Qualification Standards. Those who enrol on the course will be awarded a certificate of competence by LANTRA and will be registered under our Carer’s directory. Many of our therapists use the skills learned in care homes for the elderly and working with those with special needs.

Associate Members

If you have already achieved level 3 training elsewhere, the IFA offers an upgrade programme for you to reach level 5. This is available through certain registered IFA schools; the office will be able to advise you, depending on your location.

Professional Essential Oil Therapy Course

This is for those who wish to learn solely about essential oils, without the massage. It is for those who are already qualified in a recognised therapy, i.e. nutrition, reflexology, etc. The course is equivalent to level 4/5 of the national training and qualifications standards.

Fully Qualified Massage Therapist

This is for those who have undertaken an IFA course at an IFA registered training establishment/school. The IFA Diploma course is an internationally recognised qualification and fully complies with national occupational standards and open college network standards. Our training not only meets but exceeds the National Qualification Framework (NQF) equivalent to Level 4/5 in terms of quality and standard and meets the National Occupational Standards (NOS). The modules are 15 credits Level 4 in Aromatherapy and 15 credits level 5 Clinical Aromatherapy.

Continual Professional Development Courses (CPD)

Many IFA registered schools and training establishments offer CPD courses for those wanting to refresh or extend their knowledge or for those who have been out of the profession for some time. The IFA will also be running CPD workshops from its offices in London, starting in the summer of 2013.

Teaching

The IFA runs a tutor training programme each year and is also planning to offer a series of CPD workshops for tutors. If you are interested in a career in teaching aromatherapy please contact the office.  Some registered IFA tutors are also prepared to offer support for those wishing to upgrade their teaching qualification. These are listed on the website under ‘find a teacher’.

Examiners

Are therapists who have at least 8 years’ experience as an aromatherapist and hold a teacher’s qualification.

Schools

For those wishing to teach the IFA aromatherapy course, a syllabus is provided, registered teachers can be found listed on the website and potential students are directed towards registered schools in their area.
